Researching Ancillary Products: Analysis of Digipaks

Researching Ancilliary Products: What Is a Digipak?

In this lesson we discussed the features and functions of a digipak. It is important to record information such as this on the blog, because It would be helpful to return to this information when planning my ancillary products.

They can come with  4, 6 or 8 panels that fold outwards and can include more than one disc which contain DVD extras or additional recordings for further promotion.

Digipaks are important because they help the artist to build a fanbase and further promote the image he/she/they are trying to portray. Digipaks are also designed to encourage fans to purchase the CD, and bonus features not only further encourage this, but also again add to the brand identity. Even if the album is purchased via Itunes, fans still like to download the artwork that comes with the album.

Evaluation: Question 1

Bastille Pompeii

Camera shot from behind the main artist, highlighting the skyline or city. This was a source of inspiration for including the urban vibe, which we had similar shots to

W

in various shots of this music video, the camera person follows the main artist, this gives the feeling as if the audience is their with the artist, bridging the gap between audience and artist and making them feel closer. We had this present within our music video where the camera was following our artist.

we had the the camera move along with the artist, but  slightly slower paced due to the artists feelings and surroundings.

The 1975 - The City

Initially wanted to have a similar scene to this, but due to not using black and white filters we had to make our own style. which is shown below.

I followed conventions in all of our production pieces, the video conventions are talked about above. For the Ancillary, I included everything a typical ancillary production will have, and then some. For example, The additional content sticker on the digipak is not essential, however it shows that it has bonus content which can attract an audience.

I included all the conventional logos you see on the back and down the spine to give the digipak production a real genuine feel.

Evaluation: Question 2

The gif below highlights the scenes within the music video which have graffiti or an urban vibe to it, which is then briefly compared to the font and digipak, having this at a decent speed can one after the after can help see the link between the products.

Work that has influenced meThe original artists album cover was the source of my inspiration as the artist Skream is one of the most popular artists within the dubstep genre, spearheading it into the charts.
You can see a clear link between Skreams cover and my artist BL4KE's cover, similar font, colour scheme and a mysteriousness about the artist.

Once again, yellow seems to be consistent within the dubstep genre as yellow is not really a colour mainstream artists tend to use, this helps keep dubstep underground and different from the other genres.

Example here is showing his face, and half of it also is dark. Which once again keeps it mysterious, which is exactly what i was looking to do with my ancillary work. My artist is visible but looking away at the same time. This is also present in my music video for example

You can see BL4KE's face, but its also mysterious at the same time due to the lighting.

All in all, i believe that the combination of my music video and ancillary products have proved effective in creating a mysterious yet urban vibe to it. Which is presented in the screenshots above.

Ancillary Feedback

I presented my ancillary work to three individuals aged 17-18, i then asked them what they thought about my digipak and advert.

Collective answers

The interviewees all agreed the font use was appropriate as the same font style and colour scheme was used throughout the digipak & advert and that there was definitely an urban feel to it. They all also agreed that the (colours/fonts/positioning) was all consistent.
The synergy link between the ancillary products were obvious in correlation to my music video because of the graffiti (within the walls on the music video) and the urban feel (alleyways/city buildings/busy roads)

What i learnt about my ancillary products and what i would change personally

I learnt that my ancillary products did a good job at informing the target audience what my artists album would be like. As many people tend to judge albums by their artwork especially if its a new artist, My digipak has the artist BL4KE clearly on the first panel so that the audience instantly know my artists name in a bid to make him known. I also ensured BL4KEs face clear was clear to view with no obstructions.

I also learnt that my attempt at creating a synergy link between my three products were successful, as i incorporated and ensured that my whole feel of urban and graffiti was present in many scenes in the music video and also my ancillary products. Having them initially present in my music video gave me a basis to work on when creating my ancillary products.

Something i would change personally would be to add an item i could of used throughout my productions. For example, a necklace which could of held some sort of sentimental value within my music video, i could of then carried this on throughout my products and then when the target audience saw a necklace they could associate that with my artist Bl4KE.

Music Video - Day Trip - Audience Feedback from Can Arslan on Vimeo.

From the feedback above, i have learnt that the target audience especially liked the motif within the music video which was the stop start effect present throughout my music video (example below)

Motiff Example - Can Arslan from Can Arslan on Vimeo.

We deliberately included a scene in which our artist BL4KE gazes up and down a female counterpart to follow what Laura Mulvey says about what the modern male pop artist tends to do.

Within the cinema, everybody loved the urban vibe to it because the audience all came from similar backgrounds so the  reaction was positive. The audience all joined in with the beat as the beat matched the motif.

What i have learnt from audience feedback and what i would change

I have learnt that the motif was a good idea and its something catchy which is present throughout the music video, not too much or not too less. Having this reverse/start action within my music video has really given it a special edge to differentiate it from other pop artists, and as you can tell from the feedback thats what everybody happened to remember, which can be used to my artists advantage when producing future music videos.

If possible, i would of liked to have had some scenes shot within a club or a very busy night district out, but this was hard to do because of legal age requirements and the fact that shooting a music video at night on a street full of bars and clubs meant there was many distractions. for example, drunk people interfering with the shooting process.

Researching Ancillary products: Reflecting on AS Digipack

To begin work on my ancillary products, I first reflected on the strengths and weaknesses of the digipak I made last summer.

I then made a digital mind-map, categorising the various strengths and weaknesses into comments on the BACKGROUND AND IMAGES, FONT AND COLOUR SCHEME. This was important and helped me, because it allowed me to analyse what worked well and what didn't, and thus have more detailed notes to take with me to the planning stages of the ancillary products.

Making of question 4 documentary style video!

While planning out question 4, i decided to be a little creative and make a documentary like, day out video for when we went to the cinema as members of the media department.

I decided to use iMovie as i have not used it in my production process so far and this means i have used another piece of technology in my works other than other editing software such as final cut pro.

The program itself is for basic users, the timeline is very simple (audio and video is pretty much together) and there is only a limited number of effects.

However for making simple videos for things such as day outs it is much more time efficient and easier than other programs such as final cut pro

Evaluation Question 1

Evaluation Question 4

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

The music video had a great response at the cinema  viewing and was listed one of the best videos. After the viewing of the music video, I collected many feedback form a lot of people. The comments from two particular videos stood out for me as I found what they were saying a very similar to what we wanted to present across to the audience.

"As it's a Dubstep track, the locations usually have to be urban, so you picked really good locations to match your track"
This was very important to get the locations right which attracts our target audience.

"The scene with the girl...Maybe you should have split it up, having her in the beginning, middle and end"
This is a piece of criticism that I think I would have improved on. I would have made more sense and ran smoother if we had incorporated this, introducing the female from the beginning instead of just placing her at the end.

Drawing on what both audience members said I've learnt that the music video caters to a more masculine than feminine audience. This that emphasis this are the depressed atmosphere, Saturated effect, the main dominant male role conveyed in the video.

ANCILLARY FEED BACK - I received some feed back on my ancillary products from audience members and this is what they said...

" Costume change is quite confusing "
This is one of a few thing I would change on my didgpak. I should have stuck to one costume to make it less complicated and keep the image of BL4KE persistent in the digipak work.

Production of Ancillary work: Feedback and Improvements

During the process of producing my ancillary work, I asked for many feedback to have the best outcome for my work.

The first attempt at the inside of my digipak wasn't successful because it didn't link to the front cover of the digipak. Even tho the images link to the whole theme of the album and characteristics of the artist there is no synergy being met or connection to the front cover or advert.

Feedback from my teachers on the advert was to change the font, correct and check spelling and to add more detail to make the advert stand out more.

REARCHING Ancillary: Summary of class discussion around the importance and function of digipaks to the music industry

In class we discussed how important digipaks are to the music industry, especially to the sales aspect.

Music digipaks are similar to books,a lot of people looking for new albums are most certainly likely to judge it by its cover, as the phrase says 'don't judge books by its cover'

Firstly, Established artists can have the most simplistic digipaks without even revealing their face or even album name, just because of the buzz/hype created. A prime example of this is Kanye Wests latest album titled 'Yeezus'
This is the cover believe it or not. it sold 327,000 copies in its first week and the subsequent tour after it has pocketed $25m

Secondly, Digipaks for new artists are essential as the public can know who the new artist is. For example,When leona lewis won the x factor and released and her first album 'Spirit' This was the cover, showing her face completely so the public can know who it is.

Her name is much bigger and separate from the album name so the target audience can know who she is.

Research Ancillary Products: Last Summer Digipak

Strengths :

- Less the three colours used (colours fit the genre)
- One clear font
- Clear photograph on the front panel

Weaknesses :

- Imagine on the back panel has been stretched
- No copy right information
- Use of font because I 'liked' it
