RESEARCH: Andrew Goodwin Summary

Andrew Goodwin believed that traditional narrative analysis doesn't really apply to pop videos because pop videos approach narrative form from a different angle to novels and films.

The REASONS for different narrative structures are:

1. Pop videos are built around songs which often don't pose traditional narrative.
2. The pop video singers are both narrator and character
3. The singer often looks into the camera trying to involve the viewer at home in with the performance.

He explains how some videos are AUTONOMOUS, the visualization of the video may go beyond the original meaning.

There  are THREE types of relations between songs and videos:

ILLUSTRATION- the video tells the story of the lyric e,g dance could be seen as expressing feelings.
AMPLIFICATION- video introduce new meaning but do not contradict the lyrics, adding layers of                                            meaning.
DISJUNCTURE- there is little connection between lyrics and video or where the video contradicts the                                     lyrics.

An example of a music video of the Illustration category is Pink- Try

An example of a music video of the Amplification category is Fun - Some Nights

An example of i music video from the Disjuncture category is Chris Brown - Turn up the Music
