Research for Music Video: Functions of a Music Video

The functions of a music video is to first of promote the artist and for visual representation. Most of the time, the sole purpose of a music video is to promote the artist although this isn't always the case, depending on the genre. For example, an R&B artist such as Usher, as opposed to a Dubstep artist. Dubstep videos are made to entertain, it’s dance music, therefore whether the artist is present in the video is irrelevant, whereas in an Usher music video, it'd be essential for him to be highlighted throughout the video consistently as he’s the main source in which makes his record label lots of money.

Example: Usher - Burn

Delta Heavy - Get By

Other times, music videos are made to symbolise and tell stories. They can also be used to evoke emotions out of an audience by sending out visual messages which often makes you think deeper about a specific worldwide problem or situation. An example being, ‘Black Eyed Peas – Where is the Love’.
