"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled according." (Laura Mulvey, 1992)
In a nutshell, Laura Mulvey draws attention to the fact that there's an imbalance between male and female roles in music videos. It seems that over time, the way music video are formed has become heavy set to supposedly fit the heterosexual males fantasies as it's believed that their views are what's most important. It's clear that Mulvey feels that music industry exploits females in order to appeal to more men because commonly, the industry is generated by males therefore they have control on what's being shown and they use that power they acquire to their advantage. Genres such as RnB and Hip Hop make Mulvey's theory prominent as their videos often follow these same fundamentals. Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines is a critically example as it simply shows women parading around in next to nothing throughout the entire video. The camera is also used to zoom in on specific body parts, emphasising the women's attributes in attempts to attract men.
