Carol
Vernallis studied editing and camerawork concerning music videos and discovered
that in music videos, the edits occur more often compared to films. She then
went on to say that many stand out as disjuncture and that they contain rhythmic
basis which is closely connected to the song. Her main annotations were:
- The usual
rules of 'continuity' editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is
on the screen
- Edits may
be really obvious to draw attention to themselves (special effects)
- Frequent
use of jump cuts
- A master shot is often used to give the video structure
- The
camera may move in time with the music
All in all,
the differences between music video editing and film editing all depends on the
techniques used. Film editing requires fewer shots and shot types, as well as a
mass amount of continuity editing whereas music video editing uses various
amount of shot types and at a quicker pace in order for it to be interesting to
watch.
