Group Analysis of Costume, Props, Location and Setting in Music Videos

Within our group we picked three music videos from a genre we're interested in using for our video. We analysed the costume, props, location and setting in each video.

Video 1 - 'Mumford and Sons - Little Lion Man'
                Genre: Indie Folk

COSTUME: There was one costume worn throughout the whole video and this was folk smart wear which links to the barn-like, country life setting.
SETTING/LOCATION: The video was an internal location in which the setting was set up like a barn and theater combined into one.
PROPS: The light bulbs (slightly dimmed) hanging in lines over the band links with country traditions the Banjo and cello are very folk instruments.

Video 2 - 'Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop'
                Genre: Hip Hop

COSTUME: This artist had 10 costume changes which kept the video exciting and all the costumes used were items you could purchase in thrift shops for example a Retro jumper, Hawaiian print shirt, cowboy suit etc.
SETTING/LOCATION: There were more than 8 locations in the video. Locations included was the thrift shop, party, garage, bedroom, on the sea in a speed boat. Many of the locations where all places where you could put items brought from thrift shops linking whit the concept of the song.
PROPS: Props such as a keyboard and telescope were used to display in harmony to the lyrics.

Video 3 - 'Bastille - Pompeii'
               Genre: Indie Rock

COSTUME: Two costume changes which the first costume the main singer/character wears all black causal wear and second costume adds a leather jacket. this costume followed a typical everyday urban look.
SETTING/LOCATION: This video had 15 locations and they were all related to the city/urban life, e.g urban apartment, city buildings, streets, cafe', arcade and more.
PROPS: In particular a bike and car were props in the video again portraying the busy city life. Black eyes was a motif in the video ass it was reoccurring within different characters which give a sinister atmosphere in the video.

Two interesting and significant things we discovered about use of costume setting and props were that all videos had props that successfully linked to the whole theme of their music video which is essential, in the first and last video analysed there wasn't a significant number of costume changes which the audience focuses on the music more rather than the fancy and fussy costume changes.
