Laura Mulvey's theory highlights the STEREOTYPE of males as the strong and powerful figure and female as the submissive and sexy figure which is still presented in music videos . Men expect to see a goddess symbol flaunting her body on their TV screen/in music videos. Its the heterosexual male fantasy that determines why the female is styled that particular way in the music videos, also what body parts are too be filmed and focused on for example breasts, physique and beauty.
Here are screen shots of examples of Mulveys theory from Beyonce's 'Who Run The World' video...
- This screen shot displays slow motion which emphasises the water springing around Beyonce and a light glowing over her, glorifying women which make men gaze.
In terms of clothing in this music video, the women wear bras, suspenders, heavy make-up, etc -encouraging the passive female description Mulvey highlights. Conversely the males are wearing arm costume, enforcing the active male image.
The video tailors to the male gaze.
